Africa’s Out! was founded by Artist and Activist, Wangechi Mutu, as a dynamic, far-reaching platform to initiate, create, and make happen the radical ideas that change the way we ALL engage with Africa and, more specifically, the way Africans reach out to empower one another.
The Africa’s Out! butterfly symbolizes the very essence of a wholly evolved being expressing its freedom and beauty to the fullest.
Africa's Out believe it is everyone’s right to live with dignity, to exist without fear, to choose whomever they please to love, and to speak powerfully and create meaningfully. Africans everywhere should have their rights protected, no matter who they are. The recent criminalization of gays in Africa is making it dangerous and impossible for many simply to exist. Africa’s Out! is a sincere effort to counter this with joy, support, and celebration!
On June 5th 2015, a cross section of the fashion, art, and music worlds came together at Barbara Gladstone Gallery to support the first ever Africa's Out! celebration honoring Binyavanga Wainaina and benefitting UHAI EASHRI, with a live performance by Solange Knowles followed by a powerful music set by DJ Venus X. There was a benefit auction of original artwork from top contemporary artists such as Julie Mehretu, Cindy Sherman, Marilyn Minter, Mickalene Thomas, Shirin Neshat, Kehinde Wiley, Wangechi Mutu and many more. This celebration is sure to drum up an exciting level of noise, love, awareness and funds for UHAI EASHRI so that the work they do for LGBTI East Africans can be continually enhanced in the lives and the minds of a wider population!
